Using J Effectively
The J is worth 8 points in Scrabble (and 10 in Words With Friends), but it's the quiet troublemaker of the high-value tiles: there's no legal two-letter J word in North American play, so you have to know where it fits.
The J challenge
Unlike the X and Z, the J has no two-letter word in the TWL/NWL list used in North America, so the quick parallel plays that make those tiles easy don't exist here. (Collins players get one: JO.) That makes the J closer to the Q — you need a known landing spot rather than dropping it anywhere.
The good news: the J loves vowels, and there's a long menu of three-letter words to spend it on.

Quick J strategy
- Learn the three-letter list. With no two-letter option, the JAB / JOB / JOY family is your reliable way to cash the tile.
- Aim the J at a bonus. On a double-letter square the J alone is 16 points; land a short word across a triple-word and it's a game-changer.
- Don't hold too long. Like the Q, an unplayed J at the end costs you 8 points — keep an out in mind.
