Using Z Effectively
The Z is worth 10 points in Scrabble — tied with the Q for the most on the board — but it plays nothing like the Q. It needs no U, fits plenty of short words, and is one of the easiest big tiles to score with.
Ten points, easy to place
The Z gives you Q-level points with X-level flexibility. It pairs with vowels for quick words like ZAP, ZIP and ZOO, and there's even a two-letter play to make it lethal on premium squares.
Because it's so easy to land, the Z rewards placement more than patience — the goal is to get those 10 points sitting on a bonus.
ZA: the two-letter money play
ZA — slang for pizza — is the key two-letter Z word (Collins players also get ZO). It scores 11 points before bonuses, and on a double- or triple-letter square that's 20–30 points from two tiles. Played parallel to another word, it can score in both directions at once — the same “double-cross” trick that makes the X so dangerous.

Quick Z strategy
- Chase the premium squares. A Z on a letter bonus is 20–30 points on its own — usually your best turn.
- Use ZA both ways. Look for a gap where ZA (or ZAP, ZIT) makes a word across and down together.
- Spend it, don't hoard it. The Z is easy to place, so there's rarely a reason to sit on 10 points — and an unplayed Z at the end counts against you.
